The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) today announced that Alexandre Tombini will join the BIS as Chief Representative for the Americas.

In this role, Mr Tombini will lead efforts to develop relationships and strengthen collaboration with central banks and financial organisations in the Americas. Furthermore, he will support the expansion of the BIS’s banking operations in the region, including the establishment of a dealing room in its Representative Office for the Americas in Mexico City, a major new strategic direction of the office.

Mr Tombini, who will be based in the BIS’s Americas Office, will start in his new position on 1 September. He succeeds Enrique Alberola, who has been Chief Representative for the Americas since 2014.

Mr Tombini is currently an Executive Director of the Board at the International Monetary Fund.

Between 2011 and 2016, he was Governor of the Central Bank of Brazil and served as a member of the BIS Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Financial Stability Board’s Standing Committee on Budget Resources. In addition, he has held the positions of Deputy Governor for Financial System Regulation and Deputy Governor for Economic Research at the Central Bank of Brazil.

While Governor of the Central Bank of Brazil, he was also the acting Brazilian representative at the IMF and World Bank Group in the capacity of Alternate Governor for both institutions.

BIS General Manager Agustín Carstens said: "I have great pleasure in welcoming Alexandre to the senior management team of the BIS. Not only does he know the BIS well from his time as a Director, he also has outstanding networks ‒ and an outstanding reputation ‒ throughout the Americas. He is perfectly placed to deepen cooperation between the BIS and central banks in the region, and I very much look forward to working with him on this.”

Mr Carstens added: “I would also like to thank Enrique Alberola for his excellent work leading the office over the past five years.”

Mr Tombini holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
